Rory McIlroy’s pre-tournament prediction that he was “closer than ever” to ending his major drought came true at the US Open, although it still wasn’t enough to claim the elusive victory. McIlroy stood on the 14th tee at Pinehurst No 2 on Sunday two shots ahead of overnight leader Bryson DeChambeau and in prime position to win a first major title in 3,598 days, only to leave the course less than 90 minutes later having let victory slip through his grasp.
'He knows how to do it and there is enough golf game there to kill the opposition and win tournaments.
