Kyle Schwarber usually saves his “goddamn!” exclamation for two-homer nights. But after a titanic jack that sped out of Petco Park at 119.7 mph, concessions had to be made. 'Come to think of it, this was sort of the equivalent,' writes Ken_Rosenthal.

Long told me he noticed something different in Schwarber watching him take batting practice both in the indoor cage and on the field the previous day at Petco Park. Schwarber, the National League leader with 46 home runs during the regular season, looked healthy again. So healthy, Long called him his pick to click for the Phillies in the National League Championship Series.

It was quite a bold prediction, considering Schwarber had gone 0-for-7 with two sacrifice flies in the wild-card round and 1-for-13 with three walks in the Division Series. But Long knows Schwarber well from coaching him the past two seasons, first with the , now with the Phillies. He also knew Schwarber had hurt his right knee sliding into home plate at Nationals Park on Oct. 1. Unable to lean into his front knee, Schwarber effectively had been playing on one leg, Long said.“You could see it right away,” Long said. “It was electric.”

So often players fight through physical ailments without revealing them to the media and public. Schwarber benefited from the day off the Phillies gained Sunday by closing out the in four games. His transformation Monday was encouraging enough for Long to report it to manager Rob Thomson.
