The Moscow representative had earlier questioned the language used in the resolution.
Russia and China have vetoed a US-sponsored UN resolution calling for “an immediate and sustained ceasefire” in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza to protect civilians and enable humanitarian aid to be delivered to more than two million hungry Palestinians.
As conditions on the ground continue to worsen & famine looms, the UN keeps seeking ways for safe humanitarian access to save lives. The draft that was put to a vote made no direct link to the release of hostages taken during Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, which was in the previous draft. Russia and China vetoed a US-sponsored resolution in late October calling for pauses in the fighting to deliver aid, protection of civilians, and a halt to arming Hamas. They said it did not reflect global calls for a ceasefire.
A day earlier, America circulated a rival resolution, which went through major changes during negotiations before Friday’s vote.
