Labour has declared victory
Sadiq Khan is set to make history by securing a third term as Mayor of London , with the Labour Party declaring victory. The incumbent mayor took an early lead in the first areas to declare results, and his party is confident that he will be re-elected.
The scheme, which imposes a daily charge on drivers of the most polluting vehicles, was extended to cover all 33 boroughs of Greater London last August. No one has ever been elected for a third term as London Mayor. Ken Livingstone lost to Boris Johnson when he attempted it in 2008, while Johnson chose to return to Westminster instead.The victory for Mr Khan comes as Steve Rotheram has been elected to serve a third term as the Mayor of the Liverpool City Region after a thumping victory.
Previously, voters could cast a first and second preference vote, allowing supporters of parties like the Greens and Lib Dems to back their own candidate in the first round and then give their vote to Khan in a second round. Activists have voiced concerns about her fitness for the mayoral role following the emergence of a video where she implies that the Black community has "problems with crime". Additionally, she faced backlash for liking a social media post that featured Enoch Powell accompanied by the phrase, "It's never too late to get London back! ".
