Sainsbury's, which vowed to compete with Aldi, has now become one of the most expensive supermarkets in a weekly price comparison.
A supermarket that vowed to 'take on' Aldi is now one of the most expensive in our weekly comparison. It was only back in October when Sainsbury's was working out third cheapest behind Aldi and Lidl for a basket of eight key grocery essentials including bread and milk. But following two rises last week and another two this week, it's now just pennies behind the most expensive retailer Tesco, which knocked Asda off the spot after almost three months.
This week's hikes, in the cost of chicken breasts and butter, come after it increased the prices of bread and mince last week. The cost of its basket, which also includes milk, tea bags, coffee and beans, has risen from £12.64 last week and £12.40 the previous week to £12.83. At £2.70 for mince and £2.34 for 300g of chicken, it's now among the most expensive for those meats. Only Morrisons sells the chicken for more than that and only Tesco matches the price of the mince. The cheapest mince, at Aldi and Lidl and costing £2.39 a pack is 25% fat however, although Morrisons and Asda both sell the same 20% fat version as Sainsbury's for £2.49. We've reported previously how Sainsbury's CEO Simon Roberts shared his vision to 'take on' Aldi and admitted he was prepared to accept a fall in profits in the short term in order to ensure it stayed competitive for shoppers. Last year the retailer supercharged its battle against the budget retailer, increasing the number of items in its Aldi Price Match scheme; launching its Nectar Prices, which work similar to Tesco Clubcard; and also bringing all of its budget products under the one Stamford Street label - named after Sainsbury's former home in London's Blackfriars. It's just nine pence behind Tesco, which is working out the most expensive for a second week with a bill of £12.94. Aldi remains cheapest overall, at £12.18, followed by Morrisons at £12.31, Lidl at £12.33 and Asda at £12.4
