Sainsbury's has implemented a new feature allowing customers to freeze their Nectar points in the app, enhancing security measures against fraud and unauthorized access. This comes after reports of criminals selling Nectar accounts on social media, highlighting the importance of protecting customer data and loyalty points.
Sainsbury's has introduced a new feature allowing customers to freeze their Nectar points in the app until they are ready to spend them. This added security measure prevents customers from using their points for discounts or deals while the freeze is in place. Customers will need to unlock the points in the app to use them again. Sainsbury's assures that unlocking their card should be instant, though it may take longer in busy stores or during peak hours.
This new feature comes after reports in October 2022 of criminals selling thousands of Nectar accounts on social media. One victim shared their story of having their 10,000 point balance, worth £50, drained just days before Christmas, intended for a bottle of Remy Cognac. The points were used in a store hundreds of miles away from their home.Sainsbury's responded to these security concerns by issuing new cards to affected customers and requesting they reset their passwords. They emphasized that security is their top priority and have implemented several measures to protect customer points. The spokesperson for Nectar highlighted the spend lock feature as an extra layer of security, stating that customers can now lock their points until they are ready to use them. The spokesperson also reassured customers that their security measures were effective, citing the case of Carrie-Ann, a journalist who experienced unauthorized attempts to access her account. Despite the fraudulent attempts, Nectar blocked her original account, transferred her points to a new account, and prevented any loss of balance. Carrie-Ann now limits the amount of Nectar points on her card to £20 at a time due to this experience.A Sainsbury's spokesperson reiterated their commitment to customer account security, stating that they have various measures in place to detect and prevent fraud.
