Salford council has purchased Salford Community Stadium for £7.7 million, taking full control of the facility and surrounding land. The council plans to use the land for regeneration projects, aiming to develop a business hub that could boost the local economy and create new jobs. The stadium is also home to Sale Sharks and Salford Red Devils rugby clubs.
The plan was revealed on a windy February afternoon earlier this year by the city's mayor Paul Dennett, who arrived at Salford Community Stadium to announce the move dressed in a Salford Red Devils top.
Regeneration in Salford The council’s deal sees it take control not just of Salford Community Stadium, but also 24.76 acres of land including two training pitches, a car park with around 500 spaces, and areas earmarked for development. With Salford’s population growing and plans in the pipeline to build more than 20,000 new homes across the city under the Places for Everyone Plan, having a place to offer companies access to development land could be a big win.
Red Devils CEO Paul King said in February that the club was at a crossroads and needed certainty over the stadium to secure its future. The stadium deal also presents a chance for the council to press ahead with its rugby strategy in 2025 - aimed at getting more people involved in the sport and boosting healthy living.
