Major upgrades to Salford's train stations, including a new third platform at Salford Crescent and accessibility improvements at Salford Central, will lead to weekend service suspensions throughout 2025. Network Rail and Transport for Greater Manchester are working together on the projects, which aim to enhance passenger flow and connectivity.

Train services will be suspended across several weekends in Salford this year as work commences to upgrade the city's train stations. A £21 million project to construct a third platform at Salford Crescent station has begun, aiming to enhance passenger flow and mitigate 'traffic jam' delays. The station, one of the busiest in Greater Manchester, handles approximately 1.

2 million entries and exits annually on the Manchester to Preston line, with services connecting across the North West to Manchester and Manchester Airport. While the construction progresses, a section of University Road West beneath the A6 bridge will be closed in both directions for an estimated year, commencing today (January 13). A diversionary route has been established to minimize local disruption and ensure access to properties remains consistently available, according to Network Rail. Work at Salford Crescent is projected to conclude in 2026. A separate £10 million project to enhance Salford Central station is also underway this year. Network Rail is collaborating with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) on accessibility upgrades and improvements to the station building. These improvements encompass new customer information points and signage, facilitating passenger integration with the Bee Network. Salford Central will be closed from February 10 to April 21 to accommodate the necessary work. Consequently, no train services will operate in Salford on the following weekends in 2025: Passengers are strongly advised to verify travel schedules before embarking on weekend journeys in Salford this year, as the ongoing work at both stations may impact certain weekend services.Ben Porter, Network Rail sponsor, stated: “The new third platform at Salford Crescent station will enable signallers to more effectively manage train movements within the area. This improvement will result in smoother, more reliable journeys for passengers traversing Salford and the wider North West. “Closing a portion of University Road West is an essential step in safely and efficiently delivering this upgrade. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to drivers in Salford. We appreciate your understanding and patience during the construction process.” Mike McCusker, lead member for transport at Salford council, added: “The addition of a third platform at Salford Crescent station represents a substantial investment in our vision for the city of Salford as we strive to revitalize and modernize our existing transport infrastructure to meet the future demands of our commuter and commercial stakeholders. “In collaboration with our project partners, we have implemented plans to minimize disruption to people's journeys through the area and extend our gratitude for your patience. “The new platform will provide passengers with an enhanced experience when utilizing the station, future-proofing the facilities and offering an innovative improvement that will bolster our connectivity locally, regionally, and nationally.” Simon Elliott, head of rail at TfGM, concluded: 'As part of Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) ongoing commitment to enhancing the transport infrastructure across Greater Manchester, we welcome the significant improvement and investment planned with Network Rail’s work at Salford Crescent and TfGM’s at Salford Central. “This investment in Salford will not only elevate the passenger experience but also contribute to a more reliable and interconnected network for everyone. Collectively, these upgrades are a vital component of our broader ambition to develop a more integrated and sustainable transport system for the future.'
