Midfielder becomes the face of San Diego's expansion soccer franchise as it builds toward 2025 debut
Hirving “Chucky” Lozano made his professional soccer debut with Mexican club Pachuca in 2014 at age 18. Two years later, Pachuca won the Liga MX championship. Lozano left in 2017 for Europe and Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, which promptly won the league title. The next stop was Italy and Napoli, which last spring won its first Serie A title in 33 years, since it had an Argentine midfielder named Diego Maradona.
is building a $150 million campus on the Sycuan reservation — Sycuan is also a majority owner of the club — in the eastern portion of the county. Right to Dream offers a unique development model. It’s a chief reason, Lozano says, why he opted to leave Europe while still in his 20s. “Honestly, in my head, I thought I wanted to spend more time in Europe,” Lozano said. “But when San Diego approached me and gave me the option to join, it was a great option for me. It was a very important decision for me.
