Paul Scholes delivers a scathing assessment of Manchester United's squad, arguing that they lack a core of top players and need a stronger spine to compete for the Premier League title. He questions the suitability of certain stars, including Matthijs de Ligt and Yoro, for a championship-winning team.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has delivered a scathing critique of the club's current squad, suggesting that they lack a core of quality players and need a stronger spine to compete for the Premier League title. Scholes expressed his concerns during an interview, stating that he doesn't see a group of standout players across key positions. He pointed to teams like Liverpool, which he believes have a clear strength running through their lineup from goalkeeper to forwards.

'When you look at teams, you look right down the spine of a team. Liverpool: great goalkeeper, great centre half, forwards, midfielders, whatever. I don't think United have any of that in any position,' Scholes remarked. He outlined a specific need for a commanding centre midfielder and a potent centre forward with both stature and quality. 'Alright, I'll go for one centre midfielder and one centre forward, but with a bit of stature, a bit of quality, and really create a spine. When you've got that spine right, then you can add bits to it,' Scholes suggested. The former midfielder also questioned the capabilities of certain players to contribute to a championship-winning team. When asked about his assessment of Matthijs de Ligt, Scholes responded, 'Not really. Where are your ambitions? I’m talking about getting a team to win the Premier League.' He raised doubts about De Ligt and fellow defender Yoro's suitability for a title-winning defense, stating, 'Are you going to win the Premier League with De Ligt and Yoro as your centre-halves?' Scholes also expressed concerns about De Ligt's overall trajectory, noting that he appears to have regressed as he's aged and that previous clubs have offloaded him for a reason. He offered a more optimistic outlook on Yoro, acknowledging his youth and suggesting he be retained in the squad, but highlighted his lackluster performance in the Southampton game. Scholes further analyzed the versatility of Antony, who has been deployed in various positions, including number 10 and midfield. 'He's been played in one of the number 10 positions, he has been played in the two in the midfield, which I can see probably doesn't suit him because I don't think the greatest athlete,' Scholes observed. He ultimately concluded that Antony's strengths lie in the number 10 role, but cautioned against using him as a false nine.
