A school in Merseyside has closed due to adverse weather conditions and a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office for snow and ice. Traffic chaos is also reported across the region, with severe delays and closures on major roads.

A school in Merseyside has closed after the region was hit with a fresh weather warning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice from midnight until 12pm on Monday, January 6. Rainhill High School on Warrington Road issued the update on its social media pages to warn parents and carers the school will be closed today. It added the school will reopen on Tuesday.

In the statement, school bosses said: 'Due to adverse weather conditions, the school is closed today for the safety of staff and students. We will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, January 7.' As well as school closures, there is traffic chaos on the region's roads , including 'severe delays' on the M56 and closures on the M53. This is due to crashes and 'emergency repairs'. The warning states that some roads and railways may be affected with longer journeys by road, train and bus than unusual. In Liverpool, snow has turned to rain this morning after a weekend of cold weather. According to the Environment Agency, a flood alert is in place for the Wirral catchment area with Heswall, Ellesmere Port, Bebington, Hoylake and Wallasey . This includes the rivers Fender and Birkett and Rivacre, Dibbinsdale and Arrowe brooks. Other locations which may be affected are around Birkenhead , Bootle , Litherland and Crosby . Merseyrail said no trains will be running between Hooton and Chester on Monday, January 6 due to flooding in the Hooton and Ledsham area.
