Northwestern University researchers have made a breakthrough in understanding how metformin, a widely used Type 2 diabetes medication, works. A new study published in Science Advances provides direct evidence in mice that metformin lowers blood sugar by interfering with mitochondria, often called the cell's 'powerhouse.' The drug blocks a specific part of the cell's energy-making machinery called mitochondrial complex I, essentially cutting the cell's energy supply.
This targeted approach allows metformin to focus on cells contributing to disease progression without harming healthy cells. This finding provides a clearer understanding of metformin's mechanism of action, which has been a mystery for over 60 years
