Scotland is leading the charge in tackling single-use cup waste with the launch of Borrow Cup, the UK's first multi-brand returnable cup scheme. The initiative, launched in Glasgow, aims to make reusable cups the norm by offering a convenient and affordable alternative to disposable cups.

Scotland has launched the UK's first multi-brand returnable drinking cup scheme, known as Borrow Cup , in an effort to reduce waste generated by single-use products. The initiative, which kicked off this Monday in Glasgow, involves over 40 participating outlets, including well-known high street brands such as Costa Coffee, Burger King, Caffe Nero, and Tinderbox, as well as popular local spots like Kelvingrove Museum, Sprigg, and Glasgow City Chambers.

The Borrow Cup scheme, a collaboration between the charity Hubbub and Reposit, a reuse startup, is currently undergoing a three-month trial period with the aim of expanding nationwide if successful. Customers visiting any of the participating stores have the option to enjoy their beverage from a Borrow Cup for a refundable £1 deposit. In most locations, they can earn discounts or loyalty rewards for choosing this reusable option. Available in a variety of sizes, Borrow Cups can be exchanged for a clean cup for the next purchase or a £1 voucher. Hubbub's research indicates that while approximately 75% of Britons own a reusable cup, only about a third use it at least once every four weeks. Zero Waste Scotland reports that Scotland alone uses 388 million disposable cups annually, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. Gavin Ellis, co-founder of Hubbub, stated, 'We know disposable cup waste is a concern that Scotland is eager to tackle, so we are thrilled to launch the UK's first cross-brand returnable cup initiative here in Glasgow.' He added, 'By making it easy and convenient for people to choose reusable cups, we hope Borrow Cup will shift habits and help make reusable cups the norm.' Ellis emphasized the importance of public participation in the scheme's success, stating, 'The success of the project hinges on how many people use it, and crucially how many cups are returned to be used over and over. For it to be a success, we need the people of Glasgow to get behind Borrow Cup so we can demonstrate to the rest of the UK what is possible.' Stuart Chidley, co-founder of Reposit, expressed his excitement about the initiative, saying, 'As a local company, we are delighted to enable local residents and businesses, both local and national, to make a simple switch from single-use to returnable cups. The world is watching how Glasgow is leading the way so that they can follow.'Nicola Pierce, director of commercial planning, environment, social and governance at Burger King UK, shared the company's enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, 'Burger King UK is excited to partner with Hubbub to bring Borrow Cup to Glasgow. This industry collaboration allows us to explore innovative ways to offer our customers a convenient and sustainable alternative, and we look forward to seeing the results.' Gareth Hopley, head of communications at Caffe Nero, echoed the sentiment, saying, 'We have long been supporters of recycling schemes for disposable cups, such as the Valpak Scheme, and we're delighted to be partnering on Borrow Cup. We already offer additional loyalty stamps to any customer who uses a reusable cup in any of our stores, and Borrow Cup will seamlessly integrate with this. I'm sure it will be hugely successful.
