ScotRail passengers will likely be unable to drink alcohol on trains into 2025 with no plans in place to lift the measure that was introduced during the coronavirus pandemic.
A ban on drinking on ScotRail trains introduced during the pandemic is set to stay in place indefinitely.
The measure was brought in to help keep staff and the public safe during the height of the coronavirus outbreak but is still to be lifted by the Scottish Government. The ban is expected to last until the end of 2024 with no plans in place to review it, a ScotRail source told the Scottish Daily Express. It's understood that the train operator used to make a substantial profit by selling drinks such as beer and wine to thirsty travellers but now no longer have this income.
The source said: "There has been some disagreement over the ban as conductors don't really have powers to stop people flouting it. When asked about this, bosses have said that it's something staff will have to get used to as it will be kept in place indefinitely, with no review planned in the near future, probably until 2025 at the earliest."
Previous transport minister Jenny Gilruth overruled the British Transport Police and Transport Scotland who backed a return to the pre-pandemic rule which saw it being legal to drink on trains between 10am and 9pm. The continuation of the crackdown is being considered as part of the SNP Executive's national "conversation" on rail services but there is no plans to relax it.
