ScotRail has implemented a change to the departure boards at Glasgow Central station, extending the time information is displayed before a train's departure from 60 seconds to 90 seconds. The aim is to reduce the number of trips and falls that occur as passengers rush to catch their trains. While the intent is safety-focused, the change has elicited reactions ranging from bemusement to skepticism from commuters on social media.

ScotRail has announced a change to the departure boards at Glasgow Central station in an effort to 'prevent falls'. Currently, subsequent departures are removed from the boards a minute before the train leaves, however, this has now changed to 90 seconds. It's a common sight to see people running for their trains at the busy station, and according to Network Rail, who operates the station, trips and falls account for 80 percent of accidents at all stations.

Posting to X on Monday (January 27), ScotRail said: 'We're making some changes to the departure boards at Glasgow Central. 'From tomorrow, train information on display will be removed 90 seconds before departure, instead of the current 60 seconds. 'This change will help prevent falls as people run to catch a service.' The announcement was met with bemusement from rail passengers on X. One person commented: 'You only ever put the Neilston departures up two minutes before - so we'll have 30 seconds to work out which platform?' Another added: 'It might help prevent accidents if information about which platform trains depart from was displayed earlier. Passengers would have more time to get to the right platform and wouldn’t have to run.' A third joked: 'Well that's taken all the laughs out of everybody's day. The falls are the best part.' And a fourth said: 'I’m not convinced that this post isn’t a joke.' ScotRail asked for passenger feedback, inquiring if people like to leave it late when catching their train or if they have ever taken a tumble when running for one.
