Scots bride Rebekka Arioua-Hill tied the knot with Alaeddine Arioua, from Algeria, in May 2023 - but Alaeddine faced a torturous wait to get his visa extended.

A newlywed couple say their 'love at first sight' marriage faced an uncertain future when an 11-month visa delay caused chaos in their lives. Scots bride Rebekka Arioua-Hill, 25, tied the knot with husband Alaeddine Arioua, 29, from Algeria in May 2023.

The couple applied for a spousal extension on the visa - which would buy Al 30 more months - but the newlyweds endured an agonising 11-month wait for that visa to be approved. Rebekka has told how that plunged Al into uncertainty, leaving him unable to work or to claim for disability benefits, Edinburgh Live reports.

"On the visa he came over on, he couldn't claim public funds. He couldn't work. We were totally stuck. This extension will allow him to work. The reason it was really frustrating us is that Al couldn't do anything. He couldn't work. He couldn't claim disability benefits if he needed anything. Home Office officials eventually approved Al's visa on October 11, after Edinburgh Live contacted them regarding the situation.
