Midlothian Council has since apologised, saying they rectified the situation as soon as possible.

A Scots council has been forced to apologise after putting a mum in temporary accommodation just doors away from her emotionally abusive ex.

The woman told Edinburgh Live: "I left my partner in June with my daughter. I decided to get in touch with Midlothian Council because my sister stays in Midlothian and she's really my only support network. They actually said initially that they had nothing available for me but then miraculously they managed to get me somewhere in Mayfield.

The mum got in touch with Women's Aid after describing her last relationship as 'controlling'. She also claimed to have received a lot of 'mental abuse' from her ex. "I was involved in a controlling relationship. He spoke to me very badly and I really was a victim of mental abuse. I was just starting to get settled and then after the first month, he was moved into a permanent, two bed property.

The mum said: "I honestly am doing okay now because I am in a place that allows me to live with my sister who is literally just up the road. However, I am in a shell of a property. I have no curtains and no sofa. They did give me a fridge, freezer, cooker and plates but I literally have bin bags on my windows upstairs so me and my daughter can go to sleep. In my opinion, having your windows covered is just a basic need and we don't have it.
