Scott Brown will come up against his mentor Brendan Rodgers when Celtic face Ayr United in a pre-season friendly at Somerset Park on Friday night.
On the contrary, two years ago, on his very first day in management at Fleetwood Town he promised to bombard old boss Brendan Rodgers for tips and advice on how best to make the transition from the pitch to the dugout. And he’s been as good as his word ever since. This mentoring continued just a couple of weeks ago when the pair caught up over a cold beer near Rodgers’ holiday home in Mallorca.
“But we have to be big enough and ugly enough to admit your mistakes. I ask Brendan for his advice all the time. I have no shame over that whatsoever. I want to try to take in as much information as I possibly can. “I saw him on holiday in Spain and ended up spending a lot of time with him. It’s good to pick his brains now and then about understanding his club and also his understanding of what we’re about as well. I talk to him about everything. It’s just about understanding the game as much as I possibly can.
“I’m the Ayr manager and I want my team to play with a style that Steven and I believe in. Hopefully you’ll get to see that tomorrow – if we get a touch of the ball against Celtic! That would be lovely! There’s a sense of stability round Brown these days. The hair has been neatly grown back in to reflect this process of maturing into management.
