Former prime minister Scott Morrison has rejected suggestions that Labor ever supported a bipartisan effort on constitutional recognition for Indigenous Australians if it did not include the Voice to Parliament.
Appearing on Sky News on Monday evening, Mr Morrison dubbed Saturday’s Voice referendum an “elitist indulgence by the Prime Minister” and slammed Mr Albanese’s “arrogance”.
The 30th prime minister of Australia revealed he was “pleased” the referendum failed and said constitutional recognition and closing the gap “requires something far more practical” than the Voice.Mr Morrison also expressed support for disappointed Indigenous Australians “who were sold a pup”. Mr Morrison reiterated that “the cause of recognition is one that enjoys incredibly broad support” on both sides of politics and said he wished to “pursue” constitutional recognition for First Nations people during his leadership.
“The Labor party never offered us bipartisan support for a recognition model, their condition was always that it must be the Voice or nothing,” he said.
