The total cancer research funding went down from £3,192,504 in 2022-23 to £2,345,703 in 2023-24.
The Scottish Government has been blasted after it cut cancer research funding by £850,000 in the most recent budget. In response to a parliamentary question from Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton, the Government revealed that their total funding for cancer research was slashed by £846,801. This was a drop of 26.5 per cent.
They added that “the amount awarded for cancer research fluctuates from year to year and does not reflect an overall reduction in the budget available to support research”. Cole-Hamilton has asked the Scottish ministers to explain what assessment has been done of the impact of the funding cut. The most recent figures on cancer waiting times showed that just 70.4 per cent of cancer patients started treatment within the target time between January and March this year.
