The Cies Islands have had a cap on tourist numbers for the past seven years - and it's worked wonders for locals who now charge an entry fee
This year, mainland Europe has been hit by a series of protests and demonstrations over the impact of overtourism on local communities. Countries like Italy, Spain, and Portugal have seen locals take to the streets to demand a limit on tourist numbers, with the aim being to alleviate pressure on their infrastructure.
This cap was introduced for the same reason many parts of Spain are currently disgruntled - too many tourists. Under this restriction, only 1,800 visitors can travel to the islands each month from May 15 to September 15. Speaking to the Guardian about the cap's impact, Fernandez Bouzas said it was the right decision as it also elevated the island's perception to something more premium.
Meanwhile, in Greece, the idyllic island of Santorini is grappling with potential overcrowding as tourist figures soar, raising concerns about the need for visitor restrictions.
