The pub has a loyal customer base
Sneinton Market has developed into one of the best pub crawls in the city as lots of independent locations have opened their doors in recent months. The Fox and Grapes on Southwell road is about to celebrate its fifth birthday and shares some of the secrets to its success as one of the most beloved pubs in the area.
The pub has a history in Sneinton that goes back almost as long as the market. It has always been associated with the market trade and was once known as Pretty Windows then Peggers pub. It was the scene of a landlord’s unsolved murder. Landlord George Wilson was stabbed 14 times outside on September 8, 1963. It quickly became known as the “Pretty Windows murder”, due to the design of the pub’s windows, and at the time it sparked the biggest manhunt seen in Nottinghamshire.
"It's gone from being a bit spit and sawdust with the market and other pubs that were there to be a really trendy and welcoming environment. It's starting to come together now and it's almost an extension of Hockley now." "We always did food traditionally but it became tough to find chefs, especially after lockdown. We decided to stop doing food and concentrate on what we are great at which is beer. The plan was always to reintroduce food but we needed to refurbish the kitchen first. It's a tough space to work in but we are hoping to bring that out into an open kitchen. "
