Sky News Australia has confirmed Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie will on Tuesday formally request the chamber's Standing References Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport to expand its inquiry into the cancellation of the games.
Sky News Australia has confirmed Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie will today formally request the Senate Standing References Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport to expand its inquiry into the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Victorian Government lawyers and special counsel Leon Zwier returned from London at the weekend having failed to secure an agreement with the Commonwealth Games Federation over an amount to terminate Victoria’s host agreement. The committee will be asked to hold new hearing dates, in addition to its scheduled sessions in Geelong and Bendigo in late August.
Mr Andrews last week made the bombshell announcement that Victoria will not be able to host the 2026 games, citing an extraordinary cost blowout.
