Expect sparks to fly over Rishi Sunak leaving D-Day commemorations early, rival claims over tax and some leadership positioning
Senior figures from the seven main political parties will take part in a live television debate on BBC1 on Friday evening.
It will also be an opportunity for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who is trying to take votes from the traditionalist right, to question Sunak’s credentials on national security. Expect Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner to echo Sir Keir Starmer and raise issues about the PM’s character.if Sunak fails to win the election, may use this hour-and-a-half slice of prime-time television to burnish her credentials as his successor.
Green co-leader Carla Denyer will want to discuss her party’s plans for a wealth tax of 1 per cent on assets over £10m and 2 per cent on those over £1bn, which she says would raise an extra £30bn for the NHS by 2030. Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper may also be asked about wealth taxes – her party has previously pledged such policies., has caused alarm in Conservative HQ and triggered an upsurge in the polls for his party.
Then this week, Rayner appeared to defy Starmer again when she was asked about her vote against the renewal of the Trident in 2016. She said “I haven’t changed my mind” – although added that she supported Labour’s “triple lock” commitment to ensuring the continuation of the UK’s nuclear deterrent.
