Scottish Water maintains that the network is working as intended.

The Paisley Daily Express revealed last month how sewage was dumped into the rivers of the local authority area for hundreds of days in 2023.

The largest continual discharge saw waste water pour out for at least 14 days in a row between December 17 and December 31. Powered by the Paisley Daily Express, Renfrewshire Live is your go-to source for news, features and sport with live coverage provided direct to the app, seven days a week. “Even this figure of 463 sewage dumps is likely to be a huge underestimate, as unlike England where almost every overflow point is monitored, only a small fraction are monitored in Scotland.

Scottish Water maintains that less than one per cent of the wastewater in these discharges comes from toilets – and is therefore extremely dilute. They say that discharges are signs that the network is working as it’s meant to. It has installed sensors, which it says have enabled steps to be taken which have stopped waste water discharging into rivers and averted pollution incidents. Scottish Water says £500 million is being spent on upgrading the network.
