Harassment and misogynistic comments at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were reported to inspectors
Staff at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service who experienced discrimination or harassment failed to report it as they did not want to be labelled as a “troublemaker.”
The report, which identified the service as being outstanding in three operational areas, said Merseyside’s handling of fairness and promoting diversity, as well as promoting the right values and culture were deemed to be adequate. It said how in a staff survey, 74 of the service’s 376 staff said they had experienced being bullied, with 100 members of staff “have experienced discrimination over the past 12 months.
The inspection, which took place in May and assessed 11 areas of the organisation, said the culture of MFRS “doesn’t always align with its values.” It said how some behaviours inspectors were informed of, particularly at middle management level, didn’t meet the standards expected.
