Following an avalanche of criticism and the Mayor’s Office stepping in, the agency reversed course on its controversial proposal
Chinatown leaders say they are breathing a sigh of relief after The City’s transit bureau has — at least for now — scrapped the possibility of adding bike lanes to the neighborhood.
Neighborhood advocates had expressed concern over the plan ever since they said they first got wind last month at a North Beach town hall that bike lanes in Chinatown were on the table. One of the scenarios included installing a bike lane on Broadway, while another would make Pacific Avenue and Jackson Street into roadways shared between bikes and cars. A third scenario did not include any new bike lanes across The City at all.

Siu, who was among the handful of neighborhood leaders who contacted Mak and asked her to reach out to Breed,said he prefers not to go through the Mayor’s Office for requests like this, only using it as a “last resort.”
