The striker is hoping to be back in the starting line-up having missed the tournament opener.

If Lawrence Shankland was the type to mope around every time he suffered a setback he wouldn’t be in Germany right now.

And the 28-year-old believes the knocks ALL of the squad have taken at some point in their careers have helped them recover in time for Cologne. Shankland, who could start up front, said: “It’s been a big turnaround for me and hopefully my story will inspire a few people along the way. “To get to be in this position with the national team, I’ve had plenty of bumps along the road. It’s not just success all the way. Sometimes football disappoints you, like Friday, and you find yourself going through a hard time.

Shankland and the rest of the Scotland team will be backed in huge numbers again tonight. The Tartan Army have taken over another German city, in the hope of seeing Clarke’s team pick up their first Euro 2024 points. “My two wee girls have been over to Germany and these are memories to show them in later life – to know their dad was lucky enough to play in this tournament. They’re too young to realise just now. To them I’m just dad.

“We always knew we’d probably need four points to guarantee qualification or at least give us a right good chance. That’s still possible, so that’s what everybody’s focusing on.
