Alan Shearer believes Erling Haaland will leave Manchester City before the conclusion of his nine-and-a-half-year contract, despite the Norwegian star’s recent extension with the club. The former Newcastle United striker expressed his conviction on The Rest is Football podcast, citing financial benefits for both Haaland and City.
Alan Shearer has expressed his belief that Erling Haaland will not fulfill his nine-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester City, stating there's 'no chance' he'll remain at the club until he's 34. Haaland's recent contract extension, which keeps him at City until 2034, shocked the football world. Despite Haaland's current age of 24 and the contract's duration until he turns 34, Shearer is confident the Norwegian star will depart before the deal concludes.
Speculation regarding Haaland's long-term future, particularly a potential move to Real Madrid, has been circulating since his time at Borussia Dortmund. Even with Haaland's new contract lacking an active release clause until 2029, reportedly valued at £250m, Shearer sees a transfer as plausible at some point. On The Rest is Football podcast, alongside co-hosts Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, Shearer, the Premier League's all-time leading scorer, whose record Haaland is on track to challenge, shared his views on the forward's tenure at City.'By the way, there's absolutely no chance he's staying at Man City for nine-and-a-half years,' Shearer stated. Richards suggested Madrid as a possible next destination but noted that with existing stars like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, and Rodrygo, the La Liga champions might not urgently need Haaland. Shearer responded, 'But nine-and-a-half years, he's going to be 34 years of age. I don't see him being there, I'm not saying that he won't break the record. I'm pretty sure he will and he'll probably do it in five or six years. But he's not going to be there nine-and-a-half years.' He continued, 'I think for both him and Man City, more financially beneficial, he gets more money and for City, they get to protect their asset because if his contract's obviously not going to run out and whoever if they wanted to buy him in however many years, they'd have to pay a s*** load of money for him. So it it works for both of them, but I don't see him being there in nine-and-a-half years. In reality, (Mo) Salah could have the record or (Harry) Kane could have the record before he gets that record himself.
