The AA urges drivers to switch off their internal lights when parking and turning off their engine to prevent battery drain and winter breakdowns.
Drivers have been urged to make a simple check which could prevent breakdowns this winter as temperatures plummet. Motoring experts at the AA are advising that ensuring the internal lights on your car are switched to off when parking and when turning off your engine. The automotive specialists found that between December 2023 and February 2024, one-fifth of the breakdowns attended by the AA were due to issues with 12-volt batteries, which are the primary cause of winter-related breakdown.
The motoring organisation has suggested that switching off any additional electrical items, such as interior lights, can help prevent battery drainage. On its website, it states: 'The most common cause of a flat battery is leaving the lights on after turning the engine off, so don't forget to switch everything off as you leave the car.' 'Most cars have a 'lights on' warning sound as you open the car door.' But if your car doesn't remind you that the lights are on, it's worth adding this two-second check to your list to avoid a flat battery and the stresses that come with that. The AA has also compiled a list of ten steps to ensure your vehicle is prepared for winter and ready to hit the roads as we progress through the winter season. Drivers have also been urged to check their coolant levels and use a screen wash additive in preparation for the bad weather. And as snow has been predicted for New Year's Day, it has highlighted some vital checks to combat the frosty conditions, including ensuring your wipers are switched off and removing snow promptly. The motoring organisation also advises defrosting locks and handles, avoiding leaving damp garments inside your vehicle, and waiting before opening windows. Keeping your car spotless and setting off with caution are also advised and motorists are also told to 'Listen to your engine'
