The 27.4-foot-long whale, believed to be female and under three years old, was tested by WDC's Marine Animal Rescue and Response team, who collected samples for analysis.
While some have speculated that offshore wind farms are responsible for the recent strandings, WDC Executive Director Regina Asmutis-Silvia states that there are no active wind surveys or construction projects in their response area. Asmutis-Silvia emphasizes that the WDC is dedicated to using scientific evidence to understand the reasons behind these strandings and to protect whales in the future. WDC notes that humpback, minke, and North Atlantic right whales have been stranding in larger numbers since 2016, with deaths typically attributed to fishing gear entanglement, ship strikes, or infections
