Starting with a checklist of sparkling seas and pristine beaches, and then adding in a dash of luxury accommodations and plenty of local lore to soak up when you’ve reached your sun quota, here’s a selection of alternate, and excellent, destinations to consider.The aforementioned major metropolises may be mobbed by the masses, but are large enough to handle the tourist traffic.
Elsewhere in the Mediterranean, Malta has a fascinating history, from the Knights Hospitaller through to World War II, and offers an abundance of beaches and the experiential seaside activities to match, such as world-class diving. Historical exploration includes not only the fortified capital city of Valletta, but also Neolithic structures said to be among the oldest freestanding human constructions on the planet.
Bermuda is renowned for its pink sand beaches—which obtain their signature hue via micro-fragments of coral—and perhaps the best place to capitalize on the phenomenon is the Loren at Pink Beach. Opened in 2017, the 45-room property rests atop a largely private swath of those picturesque pink sands. Bermuda is also home to Gosling’s Rum and its ubiquitous Dark ’N Stormy, a mixed drink with Gosling’s, ginger beer, and lime. Stop into their shop while spending an afternoon in the capital of Hamilton, perhaps visiting TABS—The Authentic Bermuda Shorts—to stock up on some only-in-Bermuda formal attire. Be sure to take advantage of Bermuda’s sailing culture by heading onto the water, and stop into a prized local joint such as Woody’s or Wahoo’s for a traditional Bermudan fried-fish sandwich.
