Cleveland firefighters on are scene Tuesday of a burning historic church in the Tremont neighborhood.
CLEVELAND , Ohio - Firefighters at one point, according to the department, requested double the crews at the scene to fight the blaze.
“The first companies got here they said they saw smoke coming from the roof,” Cleveland Fire Chief Anthony Luke said. “There was a construction crew on the street said they had been doing hot work basically welding copper up in the roof.” The Cleveland Division of Fire said there are no known injuries at this time, and the cause is under investigation.
“This particular building because most of the roof is encased in copper the fire is burning underneath the copper so we got to peel back the copper to get to the fire,” Luke said.the grounds there were consecrated in 1912. “A unique thing is the firefighters connected with one of the priests and some of their old artifacts valuable artifacts they evacuated out of the back of building,” Luke said.Copyright 2024 WOIO.
