A major snow and ice warning has been issued for Scotland, with heavy snowfall expected across most of the country. Glasgow has narrowly avoided the worst of the weather, but other areas of Lanarkshire are bracing for disruption.
Most parts of the country are set to be affected by snow and ice this weekend with Glasgow narrowly avoiding the major weather warning. Glasgow city has managed to dodge the warning as snow is set to cover most of Lanarkshire with areas such as Coatbridge, Larkhall, Shotts and Lanark expecting disruption following heavy snowfall and wintery showers. Met Office weather warnings remain in place up and down the UK, covering most of Scotland , until 6am on Monday, January 6.
Weather maps show large parts of Scotland expected to see significant snowfall until the beginning of next week, particularly on Sunday, January 5, overnight into Monday. Forecasters have warned temperatures will be unlikely to rise above freezing in the coming days, with further warnings possible. They also advised taking care in difficult conditions, and leaving more time for travel. Met Office experts said: 'Whilst not all areas may be affected, outbreaks of snow will likely develop during Sunday and Sunday night, potentially giving some significant accumulations in places, especially over parts of southeast Scotland, where 2-5 cm of snow could accumulate widely, and as much as 10-15 cm over the higher ground of the Borders. Rain or sleet is more likely near some eastern coasts. 'As precipitation clears erratically eastwards overnight Sunday into Monday, ice is likely form on untreated surfaces.'
