EXCLUSIVE: STUC chief Roz Foyer said the Scottish Government could earn a £1 billion windfall if the council tax system was replaced.
The failure to scrap the council tax system in Scotland is "inexcusable" at a time public services are being cut, the country's most senior trade unionist has said.
But Foyer said the failure to reform local taxation was an example of the SNP missing an opportunity to raise additional revenues. "The cumulative impact of the SNP council tax freeze since it came to power is a billion pounds in lost revenue. That is money that councils in Scotland would have to spend right now if council tax revenues hadn't been cut so deeply compared to councils in England."
The Scottish Government has said it was still "committed to developing fairer, more inclusive and fiscally sustainable forms of local taxation".
