Leeds United's efforts to sign Cameron Archer from struggling Southampton have been met with resistance. Southampton are unwilling to sell the striker during the January transfer window.
Leeds United 's pursuit of Cameron Archer has encountered a setback as Premier League strugglers Southampton rejected their initial approach. While Leeds Live understands that the Saints are unlikely to part ways with Archer during the January transfer window, the Whites intend to remain vigilant in the final days of the window, having held a longstanding interest in the striker.
Despite their continued interest, Leeds are not overly optimistic about securing a deal, given Southampton's firm stance. Club sources have emphasized that Leeds will only pursue a player who they believe will significantly enhance the squad, avoiding additions solely for numerical purposes. Archer joined the Premier League last summer from Aston Villa in a £15 million transfer, signing a four-year contract with the south coast club. However, he has found his opportunities limited this season, netting five goals in 25 appearances across all competitions. His Premier League contribution has been modest, scoring just twice in 10 starts. Southampton's current predicament, languishing at the bottom of the table and 11 points adrift of safety, adds another layer of complexity to Archer's situation. Despite his struggles in the top flight, Archer has proven his capabilities at the Championship level, enjoying successful loan spells at Preston North End and Middlesbrough. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Middlesbrough's playoff qualification effort in 2023. Archer returned to Villa following Sheffield United's relegation from the Premier League, which triggered a buy-back clause in his contract. However, Villa subsequently sold him in a lucrative deal to Southampton. Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has acknowledged his desire to strengthen the team's attacking options before the transfer window closes on Monday. Currently, Farke's attacking choices are limited to Joel Piroe, Mateo Joseph, and Patrick Bamford, with Bamford recovering from a hamstring injury
