Axel Rudakubana remained silent during the hearing and did not answer any questions

The teenager accused of the murder of three girls at a dance class in Southport remained silent as he appeared in court this morning charged with two further offences.

Stan Reiz KC, defending, said: "Mr Rudakubana has remained silent at previous hearings as well. For reasons of his own he has chosen not to answer the question." Senior District Judge Paul Goldspring asked whether the matters were related and Ms Heer confirmed they were. Judge Goldspring said the new charges were 'related in the sense they had come out of the same facts'.

The two new charges were announced yesterday afternoon by Merseyside Police at a press conference held at the force's HQ. Chief Constable Serena Kennedy told the press conference: "The two further offences relate to evidence obtained by Merseyside Police during searches of Axel Rudakubana’s home address as part of a lengthy and complex investigation which has been ongoing since the 29th of July.

Ricin is a highly potent toxin which naturally occurs in castor beans. If it is ingested it can cause nausea, diarrhoea, and aches and pains within 18 to 24 hours and, if the dose is big enough, be deadly causing fatal damage to the heart and fluid in the lungs.
