Locals in Southport come together to clean up debris left after unrest broke out following Monday's knife attack.
Local residents who gathered to clean up the destruction left by "thugs" have said violence was the "last thing" they wanted as the "heartbroken" community was "trying to grieve"."Southport really doesn't need it after what we have gone through," said Marc Foreman, one of the volunteers in the clean-up operation.
A 17-year-old boy remains in custody accused of murder and attempted murder after the incident which has left five other children and two adults in a critical condition.Merseyside Police Federation's Chris McGlade said more than 50 police officers were hurt in the "sustained and vicious attack".The unrest, which centred around a mosque, saw bricks and other missiles thrown and cars were set alight, including police vehicles.
Melted plastic from wheelie bins which were set alight could be seen stuck to the tarmac on St Luke's Road, with their charred contents now spilled across the road.One man stood on a bridge watching the disorder from the night before said he saw a protest filled with people "intent on trouble".
