Ryanair issued apology for what it described as 'the nonsensical decision by Spanish Air Traffic Control (ATC) to block inbound aircraft'

Air travel bosses in Spain say plane traffic management in the Balearic Islands is "gradually recovering" after chaos sparked by adverse weather conditions.

Palma Airport, the international airport located in Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, was particularly affected by the disruptions of recent days. Ryanair issued an apology to customers on Thursday for what it described as "the nonsensical decision by Spanish Air Traffic Control to block inbound aircraft from landing this morning due to 'weather'" after "excessive delays and cancellations" to flights due to arrive at Palma Airport.

"After two very difficult days, in which adverse weather conditions as a result of the DANA have greatly complicated air mobility in the Mediterranean Arc, with particular impact on the Balearic Islands, route traffic and approach manoeuvres to the airports of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca are returning to normal."

"In situations of high intensity air traffic and very adverse weather conditions - in this case as a result of the DANA that has affected us since August 13 and very actively today in the Balearic Islands - the airspace available for air navigation is significantly reduced, which requires the application of flow management measures, as well as regulations on landing and takeoff manoeuvres, to ensure that flights are controlled in complete safety," the ENAIRE statement continued.
