It follows a special advisory notice which was issued for Spain and the Balearic Islands this week
An ‘extreme risk’ weather alert has been issued for Majorca today as heavy rain and storms are set to batter the island. It comes after Spain ’s national weather agency Aemet issued a special advisory notice this week as storms swept eastern mainland Spain and the Balearics.
Meteorologists have now raised the risk level of heavy rain in Majorca from amber to red as the island could see 2cm of rainfall in the space of four to five hours. The red warning has been issued for the north and northeast of the island, which includes Pollensa and Arta. The warning came into force at midnight today and is set to last until 3pm. The warning states: “Accumulated precipitation in 12 hours: 180mm. The 180 mm could be reached in a few hours .”The rest of the island is covered by an amber warning for heavy rain and storms. A yellow warning for strong coastal winds has also been issued for the northwest, northeast and southeast coastlines.
The other Balearic Islands, Ibiza and Menorca, are also under amber warnings for rain and storms. Conditions should have eased by tomorrow , but all three islands remain under yellow warnings. By Saturday all warnings have been removed. The recent stormy weather has been caused by a “DANA” which translates as ‘Isolated Depression at High Levels’. This weather front has moved across Spain and the Balearic Islands, with forecasters predicting by the end of the week it will have shifted into the central Mediterranean, but Aemet did warn in its advisory notice that “showers and storms of some intensity in parts of the Balearic Islands and northeast of the peninsula” cannot be ruled out during the first half of Friday.
