Spain now has more coronavirus deaths than China as Europe becomes epicentre of global pandemic
SPAIN overtook China to became the country with the second-most coronavirus deaths today as the number of fatalities reached a record 738 in the past 24 hours.
The gruesome single-day tally put the country, where the number of recorded coronavirus deaths now stands at 3,434, ahead of China which says it has recorded 3,287 deaths. Italy’s death figure stands at more than 6,800.
Margarita Robles, Spain's defence minister, told a prime-time Spanish TV programme: "The army, during some visits, has seen elderly people absolutely abandoned, if not dead in their beds. "We are going to be implacable and forceful when it comes to ensuring our pensioners receive the proper treatment in these residences."
