Speaker Johnson on Wednesday condemned Kimberly Cheatle's explanations for the Secret Service response.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Wednesday called for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign over the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump .that the buck stops with her for the shooting that left Trump injured at a rally on Saturday.
Cheatle has said the agency secured the inside of the building that suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks was on, but did not assign agents to the roof due to safety concerns with its slope. The U.S. must hold someone accountable for the assassination attempt, the speaker noted. He pledged to set up a task force on Monday to quickly and fully understand the incident.
“The Secret Service is working with all involved Federal, state and local agencies to understand what happened, how it happened, and how we can prevent an incident like this from ever taking place again,” she said. “We understand the importance of the independent review announced by President Biden yesterday and will participate fully.”
