JON JOHNSON TROY – Troy head football coach Gerad Parker said there would be more emphasis on special teams play during the second scrimmage of the spring and he liked what he saw Saturday.
Renfroe, the former Pike Liberal Arts standout, handled the starting placekicking duties for the first time last season and looks confident in his approach this spring. His longest field goal of the day was from 48 yards out. “So nothing is given – it’s all going to be earned. But at the end of the day, whether it’s me or Nick or Gage , we’re all going to support each other and ultimately we care about Troy winning than whoever is kicking field goals.”“We want to be able to create as much of an environment like a game feel that we can for him and we did that early in the scrimmage,” Parker said. “It certainly gives you a lot of confidence for where he is as a vet guy that has hit kicks in pressure situations.
The defense appeared to win the battle much of the scrimmage, though the offense certainly had bright moments as well. “But overall a good day in the stadium and we stayed relatively healthy, I think, knock on wood. And good to see our guys finish out a grind week.”“One of their certain core values is communication and I thought that’s the best it’s been today,” Parker said.
Tucker Kilcrease connected with Jackson Thomas on a 30-yard touchdown throw and with Zeriah Beason on about a 50-yard completion with Beason going up high for a great catch. Crowder found a wide open Devonte Ross for a 20-yard TD.
