The Edwards Aquifer Authority made the move to Stage 4 on Thursday as water levels and spring flows in the groundwater system continue to drop.

Amid worsening drought conditions, the Edwards Aquifer Authority said Thursday that it is again tightening restrictions on pumping water from the Edwards Aquifer. Pointing to “declining aquifer conditions” that include lower water levels and slower spring flows, the aquifer authority said it is moving from Stage 3 restrictions to Stage 4 restrictions.

Under Stage 4 conditions, permit holders must cut their pumping to 60% of their normal allocations. The return to Stage 4 restrictions comes less than a month after the authority eased restrictions to Stage 3 on July 26, following a series of rain showers that improved local drought conditions.

is already in Stage 3 restrictions, and a move to Stage 4 would have to be declared by the city manager. That could happen “if the total supply of water from the Edwards Aquifer and other sources is insufficient to meet customer demand, even while complying with lesser restriction stages,” according to the

website. In Stage 3, customers are still limited to outdoor watering once per week, but under the new rules different watering hours are in effect. Customers who use sprinklers or drip irrigation can only water their lawns from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 9 p.m. to midnight.
