Stellantis, the owner of Vauxhall, has announced the closure of its factory in Luton, which could lead to the loss of approximately 1,100 jobs. The company plans to move its electric vehicle production from Luton to Ellesmere Port, with the shift aimed at aligning with UK regulations on petrol and diesel vehicle sales.
A major British car maker, Stellantis , the owner of Vauxhall , has announced plans to close its factory in Luton , potentially putting around 1,100 jobs at risk. The company plans to move its electric vehicle production from Luton to its other UK plant in Ellesmere Port , near Chester. Vauxhall currently manufactures electric cars and vans at its Ellesmere Port facility, while petrol and diesel vans are produced in Luton , where the company intends to start EV production later this year.
This decision comes after Stellantis, which also owns Citroen, Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot, and Maserati, warned of a potential halt to UK production due to upcoming stricter rules on petrol and diesel vehicle sales ahead of a 2035 ban. The company's former UK boss, Maria Grazia Davino, expressed concerns that while Stellantis UK operations do not stop, production could cease if the government does not assist in stimulating demand for electric vehicles
