Stephen Baxter spent 19 years as manager of Crusaders, and now he's back with Carrick Rangers

After 19 years at the Crusaders helm Stephen Baxter admits he "needed a break". He had achieved everything he could possibly have dreamed of during his time at Seaview, including three Irish Premiership titles, four Irish Cups and an all-Ireland Setanta Cup.

It is an exciting project for the now 59-year-old, with Carrick's American investment carrying ambitious plans for the club. Baxter says he is enthused to be back in the Irish League after enjoying a five-month sabbatical. "I was out of football for six or nine months, and then the late, great Jim Semple phoned me and said they were struggling a little bit and would I come in and help them.

"And then it went from there for me. It was just the way it panned out. You went to a lot of matches and it started to grow, and players kept digging out results and responding to you." "It is just the way you're wired and made. So all that expectation and that sort of stuff, you just had to cope with it and work it out. It is a process in football nowadays.
