Stephen Gately was just 33 when he was found dead on the sofa of his holiday home in Majorca, and the unanswered questions that surround his death continue to haunt his family
The year 2009 was set to be a spectacular one for Stephen Gately , with a career and personal life blooming; the pop sensation was basking in success as Boyzone had just completed their stellar Back Again... No Matter What tour and fine-tuning their fourth studio album, 'Brother'. However, tragedy struck -and Stephen would never see its release.
In an emotional snippet from the show, Ronan relays the life-changing call: "My phone rang, it was a solicitor by the name of Gerald King that Boyzone had used in the 90s. Gerald Keen says to me, 'I'm sorry to tell you, but Stephen has passed away.' I said, 'Stephen who? ' And he said, 'Stephen Gately.' I had to call Louis and the guys and give them the news."
Their evening concluded after an encounter with Georgi Dochey, a model and student, followed by socialising at the Black Cat club until about 5.30 am. Georgi shared a chilling account of the night Stephen Gately died, revealing that he had kissed him before he fell asleep on the sofa next to Andrew. He woke up to the sound of the doorbell ringing at 8 am but decided not to answer it as he was a guest in the house.
He told The Sun in 2014, admitting he didn't know how to break the news to Andrew, who by that point was said to be sleeping in the couple's bedroom. I went into the bedroom and said, 'I'm going. Let's wake Stephen up so I can say goodbye. Andy replied, 'No, leave him sleeping,' and that's when I told him Stephen looked strange," he recalled.
Stephen's cause of death was due to a pulmonary oedema, initially thought to be caused by an undiagnosed heart condition. However, a post-mortem and toxicology report revealed that while Stephen did indeed die of natural causes, his death was ultimately caused by a congenital heart defect.
