STEPHEN GLOVER: No one under 60 will remember Ian Smith's unilateral declaration of independence from Britain, when Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) went it alone under white minority rule.

No one under 60 will remember Ian Smith's unilateral declaration of independence from Britain in 1965, when Rhodesia decided to go it alone under white minority rule.South Africa

When Smith declared UDI, the Liberal leader, Jeremy Thorpe, advocated bombing Rhodesian railway lines. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsey, wondered whether 'Christian justice' might be served by overthrowing the Smith regime by force. Yet although there'll be coverage on the BBC and in the Guardian and other citadels of progressive thought, the 80-year-old Mnangagwa doesn't attract a tiny fraction of the opprobrium heaped on Ian Smith. This is odd, because the Crocodile is a wicked man, and his regime is far less competent than Smith's.

Unsurprisingly, the Crocodile has been running a dirty campaign. An opposition supporter was stoned to death by a Zanu-PF mob, though the police, who aren't famed for their independence, claim he was crushed by a vehicle. It's a similar story with South Africa, mired in corruption and maladministration under the African National Congress . Apartheid was morally repugnant and it was a wonderful day for humanity when it ended. It so happens that, during Apartheid's misguided existence, the country had functioned pretty efficiently. For example, electricity was cheap and there weren't frequent power cuts, as there are now.

And yet this gruesome bloodshed receives little coverage here, and engenders no indignation in circles that would once have been appalled by white brutality. Would they be so quiescent if 4,000 blacks had been slaughtered by whites over the past 30 years? I don't think so. Malema could be South Africa's deputy President after next year's elections if the ANC does less well, and turns to his party for support. How the incorruptible Nelson Mandela would have hung his head in shame!
