'Store wars' have broken out after Tesco and Lidl launched an attack on plans for a new Aldi close to their existing supermarkets.
The German discount shopping giant intends to build a 1,800 sqft store, creating between 40 and 50 jobs, on Chorley New Road, close to the notoriously congested Beehive roundabout. Access into proposed supermarket will be from a new slip road entrance on Chorley New Road, near the roundabout. Competitors Lidl have objected on the grounds of loss of employment land and that transport and accessibility measures fail against the council policy. Similarly, Tesco, who have a huge superstore a few hundred yards from the site, said there had been 'inadequate retail assessment of the impact'.
Two petitions in support of the plans signed by 95 people have been received by Bolton Council. They include that investment is needed in Horwich, that it will not add to congestion as it is within walking distance of customers, it will create jobs, it will help with cost of living rises and the site is on a bus route.
