Storm Éowyn continues to batter the UK, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding. The Met Office has issued a series of warnings for the weekend, urging residents to take precautions.
Storm Éowyn is poised to unleash a fresh onslaught of powerful winds, widespread travel disruptions, and potential flooding across the United Kingdom throughout the weekend. The Met Office has issued a series of amber and yellow weather warnings for Saturday and Sunday, forecasting up to 80mm of rainfall in parts of England and Wales.
This follows the turbulent aftermath of Storm Éowyn on Friday, which wreaked havoc with winds exceeding 100 mph, resulting in over 1,000 flight cancellations, school closures, and a million homes left without power.Adding to the wintry woes, yellow snow and ice warnings remain in effect for Northern Ireland until 10 am today and in Scotland until 11 am. Icy conditions pose a significant risk of injury, with the potential for up to 10cm of snow to accumulate in Scotland during the morning. A yellow ice warning encompassing portions of south-west England, the Midlands, and southern and mid-Wales will be in place from 3 am to 10 am. ScotRail has announced the suspension of all services across Scotland until midday on Saturday at the earliest. As Saturday progresses, Storm Éowyn is expected to dissipate for most of the UK. However, the storm's impact lingers, with over 1,100 flights cancelled on Friday due to travel chaos at Dublin, Edinburgh, Heathrow, and Glasgow airports. NIE Networks reported that approximately 214,000 homes and businesses remained without power in Northern Ireland, while the Scottish Government confirmed that 106,000 properties in Scotland were without power late on Friday evening. Sunday brings a new set of challenges with a yellow wind warning covering south-west England, the English and Scottish coasts bordering the Irish Sea, Wales, and Northern Ireland from 8 am to 3 pm. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are anticipated throughout the warned region. Additionally, a yellow rain warning for southern and central England and Wales will be in effect from 8 am on Sunday until 6 am on Monday. Heavy rainfall, including thundery showers, could lead to up to 80mm of accumulation in some areas. Localized flooding of homes and businesses is possible, along with power outages and hazardous driving conditions. The Met Office has issued a 'small chance' warning of fast-flowing or deep floodwater posing a danger to life
